Impatiently Waiting Art Dolls

They have been waiting for over a month now. They are not happy with me at all.

I moved my clay station into our bedroom with hopes that I would be able to shut myself away at night and work without interruption. Sort of like a real job. I wouldn't be available to my family if I left for a job outside the home, this is how I rationalize it at least.

But I was busy with wholesale and custom orders, in addition to a little bit of business from online sales so the work station in the family room sat with no work being done.
12 undone dolls. For shame, Shannon, for shame.I feel as if I do not deserve the "Marie Antoinette Award" bestowed upon me by LoopyBoopy, who was bestowed by Gail Lackey, who was bestowed by Amy Short, who was bestowed by Tashai of UltravioletWind, who was bestowed by Art Lover. Where the trail runs cold because I could not find any mention of the award anymore.

But I am most grateful and with great power comes responsibility (just play along) and I shall resume completion of the waiting ladies and finish one of them as a French Darling in honor of this most special award.

The rules - copied from Gail Lackey's post because she had the energy to type it out in a French accent....

"Now ze rules of ze game...as one must always appear to follow ze rules(from Miss "P"s First rules of French Etiquette)
1..Pleeeze ad ze logo on your blog
2...Place a link to ze person from whom you recieved ze award.
3...nominate at least 7 or more blogs
4...put zee links to those blogs on your blog
5..leave a message on zheir blogs to tellz them zhey are ze chosen ones"

So here are my nominees for the coveted (humor me, will ya?) "Marie Antoinette Award"...
1.) Ginger German - who will one day have a blog and when she does, will display the award proudly I am sure.
2.)Rhonda Mum - who did an amazing job hosting the Les Emotion de la France book swap
3.)Eliane with artful-spirit - one of my favorite contributors to the above book.
4.)Elizabeth Holcombe - a fabulous bag artist.
5.)Kathy of Vintagesnapsandscraps - a lovely lady who creates wonderful altered art
6.)Fleamarketqueen - truly an queen of all things vintage.
7.) last but not least - Michelle Ward - who completely inspired me with a post in 2007 that contained her contribution to the Marie Antoinette Collabrative Art Zine hosted by Aahata Katkin and Lynne Perrella.

I have now spent an hour at the computer and my children are eating cheetos directly out of the bag at 9:00 am due to being left unsupervised while I hunted down links to share with you, dear reader. All for you.

Thank you, LoopyBoopy, the award was fun and special coming from you!

Twitter, Project Wonderful and Own the Hour Marketing

I am making collage sheets from Victorian and vintage clip art, digital elements and old ledger and script papers.
You can make your own tags using these super inexpensive collage sheets!

I have more sheets on the way;
Cute, aren't they? I will make up some messy, foo foo tags and atc's to give examples of what you can do with them.

Okay, some business stuff.
First off - with a nudge from inmyheadstudios , I signed up for twitter.
It was a little confusing at first but then I got it and started posting little tid bits of stuff, links to items I liked, encouragement to other sellers and people in general and LINKS TO ITEMS I LISTED. It was amazing. Stagnant views at etsy suddenly moved up quickly, I got support and encouragement from people and even made new friends!

Was it a coincidence that I started selling again? I don't know. Days when I am not able to promote on twitter, nothing happens, but when I am able to be actively involved I have great sale days.

Sign up and try it. Follow me and of course I will follow you!

(no, Vickie, I still haven't done facebook yet! :) )

Second bit of news... Following a Timothy Adams tutorial on Project Wonderful ( I love this man), I signed up for a few of these campaigns to see how it goes. I did get a sale from it for sure, but as there is no way to track where people are coming from on etsy, I am not sure how many more there may be.

Third - www.etsy.ownthehour.com. You can purchase hour time slots. I choose something a little high in price, but I did receive 8 views at 11:00am and 6 views 11:00pm. I also received 6 hearts, which is my average amount when I list on etsy all day long.
I was trying to reach late night shoppers who like shiny metal things. No buyers, but considering I did not list anything all day the fact that it brought views is a good thing.

I might try it again. I have a feeling it is mostly being viewed by other etsy sellers wanting to see what's on there, but they do claim to be trying to reach buyers.

Fourth - Put a paypal gift certificate button on your blog right now.
Seriously. It is a whole new way to boost sales. If you need help, just convo me and I will walk you through it, it's super easy. And a great way to get around etsy's wierd no gift certificate policy (this might be different but who can keep up with the changing back and forth anyway?).

THE BIG NEWS!!!!!
The book deal is back on! My schedule deadline will be for March, but I am shooting for January to challenge myself. This will be basic beading with quirky supplies. A hip, new look for beaded jewelry.
I am super excited to be involved and can't wait to get started (like I haven't started shopping in my mind already). I will let you in on more info as it comes available.

I hope to post again soon, let me know if any of these things I mentioned above works for you. I am fascinated by online marketing. :)

I thank you for reading this post in it's entirety.

Today is Veteran's Day here in the U.S. A day to honor Americans veterans of all wars.

I think of my Grandpa Charlie in remembrance of this important day. He was one of many that fought in World War 11, but he is a personal link to history for me as a veteran who was related by blood and as someone who took the time and had the courage to write about his experience in the war and as a survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

His story is difficult to read, containing many graphic details they do not go into in the news or even broadcasted programs. But I would like to share a few words of this brave and humble man in hopes that you too will remember this day with appreciation and be thankful for all those who sacrificed their lives, their time, their health, their families and even their spirits in the face of such atrocities.

"In my life, I have actually met some people who claim the "Holocaust" of the Jewish people was exaggerated, or even made up entirely. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the truth is much more horrible then the general public could even imagine. I know, because I am an eyewitness: a World War 2 veteran and survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

Often when I mention a little of my war time experiences, people call me a war hero. I have never considered myself a hero. I was just doing the job I enlisted to do.
So many people were killed or completely disabled by their war service, that I consider myself very blessed to have come home at all.

Many years later, one of our K.L.B. members came across paperwork that showed that all of the Allied Air Men prisoners of Buchenwald were scheduled to be shot only three days after we had left for Sagan Stalag Lufft 111. So Providence was on my side, even if sometimes I doubted my future.
The Germans pretty much destroyed my health, but God protected my spirit."

Staff Sergeant Charles William Roberson
March 14, 1919 ~ October 25, 2005

March 16th, 1944, positioned as a Ball turret gunner, Charlie Roberson was shot down in an area near Samar Enout, France.
The pilot of the B-17, Bob Brown, and him hid in occupied France, helped by the underground movement, Maquie, who tried to get them back to England.
Betrayed by a friend of the French Chief of Police, they were captured, interrogated, beaten, transported in a cage and imprisoned in Feresnes in Paris.

Their transportation in the cramped, sickening condition of the boxcars to Buchenwald, in Germany, was much worse then that of cattle.
Upon their arrival at the Koncentration Lager Buchenwald (K.L.B. club), they were then "deloused", stripped of clothing, shaved, with powder thrown over their bodies and in their faces.
Stuffed into overly crowded barracks, fed grass and potato peeling soup, these men witnessed and experienced horrors from before dawn to after sunset. Enlisted, Charlie weighed 137 lbs. Liberated, he weighed in at 90 lbs.

In October, 1944, they were taken to Sagon, up near the Russian border to Stalag Lufft 111.
Conditions were considerably better although unbelievably cold.

Late January 1945, upon hearing that the Russian army was about to break through the German lines on the border, they were forced to march from Sagan to Mooseberg, down through Bavaria.
With freezing temperatures and 15 to 25 inch deep snow, Charlie almost lost his feet but for a Colonel Goodrich who rubbed them with snow and supplied dry socks and shoes.
They arrived in Mooseberg 3 days later and stayed there until April.

On April 29th, 1945, they awoke to what they thought was thunder only to find tanks surrounding the camp. They saw an American flag and knew they were liberated!
General Patton, commander of the 14th Armored Division ordered surrender. The camp commandant surrendered without a fight.

Charlie Roberson had been a prisoner of war for one year and five days. He arrived home in St. Louis late May.
Awarded a Purple Heart, the American Campaign Medal, World War 11 Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Bronze Service Star.

In my selfish and ignorant youth, I did not recognize the value of his actions and sacrifice while he was alive. But I do now. I am so grateful for all the service men and woman went through to insure a free nation and hope that we will continue to learn from the valuable lessons that dark time has taught us.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Art Dolls to Meet!

They are a little further along now and it's very exciting seeing them come to life.
I did these dolls a little differently by completing their hair and make-up before padding out the bodies. I only have little boots to sculpt and they will be complete!

I was not that excited when they were first sculpted, I thought they would not look very good for some reason. I grabbed a head off my work desk to show g.g (my mom) how I glue on the hair.
I knew I would be paying more attention to g.g then to the doll in my hands so I picked the head I liked the least and just started gluing bits of hair on, sort of haphazardly.

But then, after the hair and make-up, Christine introduced herself (the dark haired one) to me and she is now my favorite.
She is so wise and so burdened by all this wisdom she can hardly look up.
Ooooooh, I can't wait for her to be finished!

It just goes to show, you should always follow through with a project even if it is not what you expected or even something you like, lol, it could end up being life changing.

breakfast with boo

This morning, somewhere around 4 or 5 am, boo woke up with growing pains in both his legs. It happens frequently and I usually respond by administering pain reliever, heating up a heat pack and rubbing his back until he falls back asleep.

But we couldn't go back to sleep so we talked and snuggled. And giggled.
Until we were hungry.
He wanted to learn how to make toast, so I showed him. Telling him the most important thing was to never walk away from the toaster oven. You will burn your toast every time.

Guess what I did? And guess who reminded me and then laughed his skinny little butt off when I had to start new toast?

Then he asks for bacon, which is rare that we actually have some, so I fry some bacon for him and sit down, drooling, next to him while I eat yogurt.
We proceeded to have the most interesting conversation.

This is what I learned from my breakfast with boo.....

1.)Phalanges is spelled with ph not f.

2.)There are 27 bones in the human hand but only 26 in the human foot.

3.)The female Velvet Ant can't fly, but has a stinger. While the male Velvet Ant can fly but is not equipped with a stinger. Apparently because "Boys are smart and run away from danger." Boo's hypothesis.

4.) The okapi and the pre-historic macrauchenia (I had to look up that one) would have both had the same speed in running because their front top legs are the same muscley size.

5.) His ape (plastic) should live in our shower because it is "best suited" to a rain forest habitat.

6.) If Dad really didn't want him to jump on the bed, he wouldn't have put such a big bouncy bed in his room.

As I pick up the house later in the morning, I see next to his bed a stack of reading material;
Weird and Wild Creature cards, Zoo books, his Spore game manual, Mammoth Book of Dinosaurs vol.2 and Journey Through the Human Body.
He often reads late into the night and I am grateful he is as excited about reading as he is gaming. Neither of which I control by forcing upon him or limiting his use of. And I think he is better for it!

New Fine Silver Collection

Honestly, they are not very new. I have had pieces of them made for awhile and just recently designed jewelry with them, then finished them.
Most importantly, I took photos. Why is it so hard to get to that point? The sun? I do not know, but yesterday as Vickie, from In My Head Studios, and I were emailing each other about the right light for photographing, I looked over and saw it... the perfect light in my kitchen! I didn't even change out of my pj's, I just grabbed my box of background papers and my box of finished goods and started snapping away.

I am still thinking of titles for them so who knows when they will actually be listed but here are a few of my personal favorites;
