New things I learned after only 5 YEARS of blogging

I just embarrass myself.
So I couldn't figure out how some of you knew when I posted a new post.
I'm like "How on earth do they respond so quickly?"
Uhhhh, duh. The "subscribe to" button gadget I inserted myself.

(When you go to your dashboard for blogger, click  the Settings tab. Then click the Design tab. You should be on a page that shows the lay out of your blog with a clickable link that says "ADD A GADGET". Click that and you can look for gadgets that install on your blog. One of them is the "Subscription Link" button.)

And then some of you would answer me over email. But how? When you leave comments on my blog I do not see your email address, so how do you know mine?
Again, Dur/Head Slap!

In settings under comments, you can choose to be alerted of new comments through your email. When you get an email, you get their email and you can respond in a personal way to any questions or what have you. (Which I really try to do but they quickly overwhelm my inbox and I can't leave emails up in my inbox, it's like an ODC thing, where I have to respond, file or delete or I feel the world is closing in on me and I run, run, run as fast as I can away from the computer, away from made up expectations, away from, wait, where was I?)

And the last thing I recently learned after blogging for 5 years?
You're going to laugh....

How to schedule a blog post!
I know, like I said, I embarrass myself.

There is a button under your new post that says POST OPTIONS.
Click and you are given OPTIONS to schedule a post. Set the date and time BUT make sure you hit PUBLISH otherwise it doesn't publish your scheduled post. Learned that the hard way.
Never will I miss posting something like Pinky's kindergarten graduation because I got busy and it passed, or other timely things that mean a lot to me but zoom on by without a chance to express my feeeeeeelllliiiiiings.

Right now I have 10, yes, 10! blog posts scheduled. They are in various stages of readiness; some are waiting for the perfect light to take pictures in, others are waiting for me to do the research and copy the links. But I am PREPARED.

This feels good.

  1. Hahaha! We won't hold it against you. My 3-year-old nephew can do things on the computer I can't even dream of, so don't feel bad. It's all a learning curve.

  3. well thank you for this! i never knew how to schedule them myself... i have learned after many head slaps how to accomplish some of the others... but this was wonderful and informative... and, as usual, felt like it was just a conversation held while standing in line at the grocery store between friends... i love that!

  4. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't automatically KNOW these little things. (I don't think anybody knows them all, no matter what they try to tell us). What I want to know is, if I receive an email containing a followers comment on my blog, will they receive my reply to the email? Even if it comes with the address "no reply comment"? I'll have to figure that one out!
by the way, I can't leave messages sitting in my email either. I have to clean it out every day!

  6. Well, don't feel left out. I am relatively new to blogging and had to ask questions about the things you mentioned, and even how to insert photos and links! I'm stilll asking questions!

Be proud that you have created a lovely blog despite all this!

  7. I am sure that there is a Blogging for Dummies book out there but I prefer to learn the hard way. That way I remember my lessons ;-) I am learning it all as I go too. The key is not to look like I am fumbling my way through. I credit that to my blogging background and ability to upload a photo or two! You make me smile, Miss Shannon!
    Enjoy the day!

  11. Better late than never, as the saying goes. One thing I found with scheduling posts, once it's published it keeps the date that you first wrote it. Personally I hate that. So I always put the date as 2011, then come back to change it for the date when I really publish it. Hope I'm making sense. Anyway... Happy blogging!

  13. Oh, don't feel bad. I am always the last person to figure out anything (as witness my recent conversion to all things resin like 20 years AFTER the entire rest of the beading world has already been there, done that). TEN blog posts? Go, you!

  21. Can I call on you if I ever start a blog...? Im sure it takes awhile to learn things, and sometimes its the hard way. The technology with computers...it's exciting. I am new (and fickle) to looking at blogs, but I always enjoy what I find on your blog and I usually learn something new!
