This is my Boo.

The smile. The enthusiasm for life and discovery. The sense of humor. The intelligence. The compassion and innocence. I could just go on and on about this person and still never come close to accurately describing his spirit. The gift that is his life.

From the beginning he has been different. I tell him 'no' as a baby and he just stops. The way he has listened from the youngest age and then followed through. His memory is amazing. He can listen to a song once and sing it back to you days later (his latest favorite is Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody , he sings the falsetto and everything!).

I have invested so much time into this child. Hours of play on the floor, every educational toy, book and game we could get our hands on. I like to think it's helped but deep down I know it was already in there, the attention was what mattered the most.

Hubby and I liked to joke that God doesn't give more then we can handle so it's not saying a lot about us as parents that he gave us the perfect child. I had no clue what normal children were like until Pinky came a long. I really thought that if you just focused and explained calmly what you expected of your child it would just happen. Because this is how it works with Boo. Ha!

He took the arrival of his sister in stride. No jealousy, no problems sharing, sweet and gentle, understanding of the time involved of taking care of a new baby. He was 4. I remember him pushing her in her bouncy car into his room "so she can watch me play dinosaurs".

He was getting bored though. I couldn't drop everything and make a batch of home made play dough with him, I couldn't build any train tracks with him, put together lego cars or read the average of 6 books a day that we would go through. Life was different to say the least!

School was on the horizon so we started to prepare for that. Really building him for the big day.
He was so excited, he would get to play with new toys and games, make new friends, read and sing and play at the play park everyday! It was a big deal.

It took him about 2 months to figure out it was not all those things. They had toys but he never got to play with them, he made a couple of friends but he couldn't talk to them until he went outside to play for 10 minutes.
When you asked him what he did in school this is how he would reply "Cut and color, color and cut." in the most bored tone of voice. It was so true. Day after day of worksheet upon worksheet. He was so offended he was only allowed to have 1 hour of one day of computer time.
At home he was completing Jumpstarts First Grade computer game on his own.

The worst part was getting him up in the morning, he just cried and cried. Our happy Boo was happy no more.

And the meanness! My gosh, the discipline I'd be whippin out on some of the boys he described to me! One boy stole his markers every day until Boo yelled at him and got in trouble. Another boy kicked him in the 'cookies' at the water fountain. One boy threw him down on the rocks outside.
When Mike and I discussed it with his teacher (a wonderful, warm woman with 17 years of experience - Boo adored her) she said it was policy to have the kids work it out on their own.
"Unless there's blood don't come to me" was how she put it. I completely see her point.
There is meanness all over the world and children will have to learn to deal with it. Plus the classroom size was 25 kids to 2 adults, what could she do really?
(Well, we could teach our kids how to avoid physical confrontation so maybe it doesn't come to the bloody part, but I digress)
In summary He Hated School.

So the next year I kept him home.

Yesterday Boo woke up on his own at 7:30am, hugged and kissed everyone good morning, watched T.V. with his sister, had a warm breakfast and brushed his teeth and combed his hair (he's decided he wants to grow it long).
Then he took his sister on a Dora Backpack Adventure around the house where they read clues and look for something and overcome obstacles. Then he wrote his address (in case he ever gets lost) and played x-box and Zoo Tycoon until he was bored.
We had lunch, he played with neighborhood kids until 3:30pm then cleaned up the yard.
He captured a spider, without touching it (thank you Animal Planet), came inside, found a magazine with the word spider in it, typed it into Google, and searched the web for the type of spider he caught (he determined it was a Tiger Spider).
He then went onto FunSchool and proceeded to do math problems for 2 hours until it was dinner. This was all voluntarily.
He picked up his room, played outside with a few neighborhood girls, and ate fruit until it was time for his shower.
He asked to snuggle before he prayed and he prayed that all the sickness in the world would bounce against the shield of God, like this. He then demonstrated to God with his hands how it would all go down, sound effects and everything. (it was so hard not to laugh.)
He read Zoo Books magazine until he fell asleep around 9:30pm.

If your ever interested in relearning how kids (and adults for that matter) can educate themselves please take the time to read this website.
It was a real eye opener for me. Difficult at first to apply to life that has been shaped by the public school system of America, and not for everyone.
Some people have thrived and become invaluable members of society because of public school, some in spite of public school. But public school and it's doctrine is not the only way for people to come into their life's work, their plan, their purpose. I think it can actually distract and misguide some people and their personal gifts.

I want so much for my son. I will never rest in seeking out what is best, changing and adapting when we must, holding to and preserving when necessary.
He deserves what's best for him, not what people who don't even know him feel is best.

From The Paper Princess

I have loved this bakers twine ever since I saw it on a post a long time ago, I can't remember where.
Then it started showing up on etsy and I had to buy some!

I got a big roll from The Paper Princess.
In brown and white, but she has blue, red and I think green. I might get blue next.
She also has the cutest postcards and gift enclosures that I might buy too!

I use some twine to tie up packages but since the postal rates have gone up I stopped wrapping things in pretty paper and twine to help off set the cost of packaging. :( This makes me sad.

I calculated to the penny what shipping costs are, even scotch tape, because I was forever running out and people don't like it when you try to hold together packages with spit.

I still don't charge for time which is stupid because evenings used to be creating time, now I run back and forth between the computer and my packaging area in the evenings, confirming addresses, thanking people, double checking orders with user names and paypal accounts, babysitting the printer, and taping things.

Not quite as inspiring.

Anyway, I have a few more purchases to share with you so I'll post those through out the week.

A package in the Mail!

Eva has sent a package!
She sent;
A seahorse wrapped for "the little Scientist"
A package of stickers for the little Princess
A chocolate bar for me with the coolest Tallinn wrapper
An exquisite collage fabric card saying Happy Mother's Day
A pack of postcards depicting the breathtaking views of Tallinn and...
A heart felt hand written note expressing love and life!

It was beautifully sweet . I will have more pictures when our weather changes.
Thank you, Eva.
I needed this more than you will ever know.

New Stamps = New Pendants!

You want to touch it, don't you?

I loved all the comments about what you would do with your mothers day with a babysitter and no time constraints! Thrifting, coffee shop, sleep, going with the flow - I love them all!
Mom (G.G.) said trying on dresses, which is fine, I love the colors and textures of clothes...
ON THE RACK! On my body, after I've eaten at Macaroni Grill? There had better be a paper store nearby... so I can quickly forget what horrors the unforgiving dressing room mirror has opened my eyes to.

The Butterfly House in Saint Louis, Missouri

Isn't it unreal? I'm very happy with my new camera.

The kids and I took G.G. (my mom, their Grammy) to Steak n Shake for lunch and then visited the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House.

Mom loves flowers and butterflies and the kids could be kept occupied with the fascinating exhibits.

Boo is an insect expert (along with being an animal expert ) and was siting facts here and there about various bugs, especially spiders. I was so proud of him.

Pinky, well, she just couldn't help herself! She is a butterfly chaser, flower picker, trod off the beaten path kinda girl. We barely got to look at the butterflies!

But I did get lovely pictures, go to my flickr to check out a few more photos.

I have had a buuuu-ssssy week: 100 pendants in the last 5 days through Etsy, 25 pendant/ring wholesale order, and 2 awesome consignment deals. It is so easy to get lost in the business.
There must be 6 huge loads of laundry in various stages between dirty and foldedbutnotputaway.

I did however just get an official notice from my husband as to what Mother's day would be about.

They (my Poppy and my husband) got a reservation and a $100 gift card for Macaroni Grill for my Mom, my sister and I to enjoy on Sunday, while they watch the kids (4 kids - 6 & under) with NO TIME LIMITATIONS!

A day full of possibilities! What would you do?

1000th item SOLD!

WhoooooWeeeeee! I have sold my 1000th item on Etsy. This is a huge deal to me.
A day of celebration!
I have taken little bits of nothing and created little somethings and sold them 1000 times!

I heard of Etsy through a magazine - Somerset Studios. Then I read about it in L.K.Ludwigs blog ' Gryphon's Feather Studio'.
I had boxes and boxes of stuff just sitting around, from the days of flea markets and craft fairs.
So in an effort to make more room I started listing stuff.
It surprised me that the polymer clay experiments I've played with since 1993 sold the best.
I thought it was because I had them listed so cheaply.
I kept trying other stuff too, stuff I had made at home and gotten compliments on.
But only a sale here and there. And a whole lot of credit card debt.

We were so broke, I was about to start looking for a job outside of home, part-time in the evenings and weekends when my husband was home. The only time I had for creating! It made me sad because if I don't create I get very cranky. So I thought maybe there was a way to make Etsy my job. Can anyone relate so far?

I began researching, I read all the posts in the forums about selling. Photographing, marketing, buying statistics, shipping (lost a lot of money there), turn offs for buyers, listing habits from the top sellers, everything!
I also watched the recently sold items, noting color combination's, which photographs stood out, which buyers repeatedly showed up. Then I stalked them. I clicked on each and every link they provided, I read their store policies, poured over their Flickr groups, blogs, myspace (scary place), street teams etc.

I know they say to work smarter not harder which is why the next step will be to invest and create pieces that are more time consuming, which will bring in a higher profit.

So I guess you could call my Polymer Pendants my Loss Leader. The inexpensive items that bring in regular traffic, but you don't make a huge profit on.

If I were to break down my income from Etsy it would look pretty sad hourly. So I don't.
I just make sure I'm making more than what I've spent, for it is truly a labor of love.
And we don't have to live on soup until hubby's payday, you know what I mean?

I totally did not mean to ramble, maybe this will help someone?

I think it's important to remember the people like me, who appreciate the fine arts, but who simply can't afford to purchase them.
But that's a whole other post!

If I could I would invite you all to my Mom's cabin on the lake. Where we would sit on the deck, in the cool spring air, gaze upon the water, sip our beverage of choice, laugh, support, encourage each other, share secrets and tips and recipes (Evaaaaaa!) and celebrate the sales that have been and the sales that will come!

Thank you to all of my treasured customers!

I've been Tagged...

I've never been tagged before! The fact that someone (my dear Eva) is actually interested in my answers makes me feel good.

My first instinct was to make my answers as dramatic as I could , which isn't hard since I've done a lot of livin' in my short, tumulus life, however I don't know if that's smart since I use this blog for business also.

So here goes;

1.) I have a huge, passionate, previously secret crush on Wolverine from X-Men.
Let me be clear that it is not Hugh Jackman the actor, who uses filthy language in interviews, but his character, Wolverine.

2.) I have a partial lazy eye (as seen in the picture above) that I will use an eye-patch for once it gets really prominent. Won't that be cool? I will look so awesome in an eye-patch.

3.) I have had a total of 5 pregnancies, 3 full term births, but have given birth to 4 babies total, however I am only a mother to two.
Can you figure that riddle out?

4.) I am claustrophobic. I had a complete and total anxiety attack on my honeymoon trying to scuba dive. Which completely shocked me as I have always been known for my bravery.

5.) I never talk on the phone. Only to my husband, my mom, or my sister. I will not answer for anyone else. I feel anxious when the phone rings.

6.) I have been a squatter. For approx. 1 year I was homeless and living in various unscrupulous places.

7.) I have yet to learn how to ride a bike.
My parents were building a house and were extremely busy, then we moved and my new friends had 4-wheelers and drove me everywhere. I just never learned.

There. Wasn't that a fascinating read?

I tag Msbelle
and C. Gail Design
Two talented women who have taken the time to comment on my blog, and whom I would love to know more about.

The above photo is from 1990. I think. It's all a blur now.
